Adventure Playgrounds
Come along to one of Portsmouth City Council’s six free, exciting adventure playgrounds and discover a world of opportunity for children.
No two are the same, so if your child enjoys a stimulating environment with loads of play, an adventure playground is for them. They can whizz along zip lines, cool off in splash pools, get messy in sand-pits, show their artistic talents with arts and crafts, build dens, climb trees, dress-up and much more.
Adventure awaits 6-13 year olds at our six free adventure playgrounds. No two sites are the same, with some boasting unique facilities like:
- Splash pools
- Sports
- Sand pits
- Arts and crafts
- Cookery
- Games areas
- Wood workshops
Playgrounds are generally aimed at children aged between six and thirteen, but younger children are still welcome if accompanied by an adult.
Climbing
Every playground has a huge climbing structure designed to test agility, balance and imagination, and many have been co-designed and painted by the children themselves. There’s a whole host of exciting things for children to become involved in, including a variety of indoor and outdoor activities designed to challenge, delight and inspire. During the holidays we also hold Play Festivals with themed dress up, games and activities.
Younger Children
Our adventure playgrounds are aimed at 6-13 year olds, though younger children may come along and join in the fun too if accompanied by a parent or adult 18+. Opening times and facilities vary from site to site so select the playground you’d like to visit to find out more.
Other Activities
Whether it’s gardening, construction, discovering wildlife, making friends or simply getting messy with water and sand, there’s something for everyone at one of Portsmouth’s adventure playgrounds.
Staffing
Adventure playgrounds are staffed by dedicated and fully qualified individuals. Children learn countless skills through play, so our play workers encourage children to make their own decisions and take risks, safe in the knowledge that help is at hand when they need it.
We let children make their own choices about what they want to do and how they want to do it. This motivates them to become independent and boosts their confidence.
Passport to play!
In the summer holidays our Play Passport Challenge is on offer for young ones. All they need to do is collect their FREE Play Passport from one of our adventure playground sites, fill in the details and then begin their mission…
At each playground there is a dedicated ‘symbol’ engraving that has been designed by the children themselves. Using a crayon to rub the icon into their passports – the challenge is to collect them all before the end of the holidays. There’s also a diary section to complete and record their adventures too!
