The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

What is it?

The Portsmouth Youth Service offers the DofE Award and provides programmes of fun activities that develop the mind, body and soul through social interaction and team working. The DofE encourages young people to live life as an adventure!

There are four sections to complete:

  • Volunteering: providing a service to people or the community
  • Physical: improving in sport, dance or fitness activities.
  • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
  • Expedition: planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey.

Anyone can join from age 13-25, which leads to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Why do it?

Young people doing the DofE Award develop skills and attitudes they need to become confident adults. Qualities that colleges, universities and employers are looking for. So, by supporting your child to do their DofE, you are helping develop their future.

Young people have access to a wide range of activities including music, dance, gardening, and sports amongst many others. Those who have taken part so far have developed self-confidence, independence, responsibility and made new friends.

Participant feedback

Charlotte, who successfully completed her Bronze DofE programme with the youth service last year, said, Doing the voluntary, skills and physical activities was straightforward and I enjoyed it as it was things I enjoyed doing. I did not feel I was doing anything too hard so I just had fun doing it but the expedition was mentally and physically challenging. It was something I am not used to so it pushed me a lot. Some things I enjoyed in particular were the views from the hilltops and all the wildlife I saw on the journey…  I achieved a lot and I am proud for doing it.”
